Clinical study of Breast Diseases

Abstract
Clinical observation was made in 441 cases of the breast lesions at Department of Surgery, College of Medicine, Korea University, during a period of 4.5 years from January 1971 to June, 1975.
1. Among 441 cases, 15 cases were observed in male (all being gynecomastia) and 426 cases were observed in female, in which acute mastitis was noted in 40.6%, mammary dyspasia in 26.3%, fibroadenoma in 9.6% and cancer in 9.8%.
2. Mean age of acute mastitis was 28.1 years mammary dysplasia 32.8 years, fibroadenoma 27.4 years and cancer 52.6 years.
3. Mammary dysplasia and cancer were slightly more frequent in the left breasts.
4. Most prominent affliction of female breast was acute mastitis(40.6%).
5. Duration from onset to treatment for acute mastitis was 11 days on an average (64.7%) were within 10 days) and nipple retraction was seen in 12.1%. Right breast was more often afflicted than left, 37.4% and bilateral, 37.4%. Upper lateral quadrant was more often afflicted (23. 4%).
6. Clinical findings and symptoms of breast cancer were as follows: palpable mass(97.6%), skin abnormalities (40.4%), pain (14.4%) and discharge (11.9%).
7. Duration from onset to treatment of cancer was commonly within 1 year (52.4%) and average duration was 26.7 months.
8. Breast cancer was more common in left breast (52.8%) and most frequency in upper lateral quadrant (57. 1%).
9. Overall clinical axillary lymphnode involvment was 71.4% and more frequent in upper lateral quadrantation(79, 5%).
10. Correlation of positiveness of the clinical node involvement, and pathologic finding was as follows; clinically positive and pathologically positive (83.3%), clinically positive and path-ologically negative (16.7%), clinically negative and pathologically positive (375%) and clinically negative and pathiogically negative (52.5%).
11. Pathologic classification of breast cancer was as follows; adenocarcinoma (57.7%). comedo and medullary carcinoma (both 11.5%), lobular carcinoma(7.7%) and paget¢¥s disease and papillary carcinoma (both 3.8%).
12. Standard radical mastetomy was performed in 25 of 26 cases.
